I’m compelled to write this post after hearing a woman across the aisle in the grocery store complain that she couldn’t make her guacamole because the avocados in the store were not ripe.
If you plan on making guacamole for a party, or serving avocado slices in a burger spread, plan ahead and BUY GREEN, UNRIPE AVOCADOS 2-4 DAYS AHEAD OF TIME!
That way, by the day your party comes around, your avocados will be perfectly ripe (and your bum will be covered).
You can’t bank on your grocery store having ripe avocados in stock. More often than not, the avocados will be unripe and green. And if they are ripe, there’s a good chance they’ll be snatched up by someone else or thrown away by the store associates. Sad, huh?
And if you eat avocados on a daily basis, I recommend buying them in a variety of shades, if possible.
Here for example, I found a pack of green, unripe avocados (bottom) and a pack of brown, ripe ones (top). Perfect for enjoying both early and late in the week!
To test for ripeness, give the avocado a soft squeeze and it should yield to moderate pressure (but not too much).
Or, you can flick the small round stem off the top of the avocado (see above). If it comes off easily, the avocado is ripe! If the stem doesn’t come off, the avocado is not ripe.
Lastly, here are some of my favorite avocado recipes!
